On Saturday 30th September, Mr Blandford took seven Year 12 students to The Reach in Woolwich, South London. Whilst there, we met the two leaders of The Ajvir Singh Sandhu Leadership Foundation, who then introduced us to the three instructors, who explained what our day entailed.
We worked in alternating groups- whilst one group did the climbing activity the other carried out the leadership activities with one of the instructors. During the climbing activity, we learned how to tie a figure eight knot, belay, as well as climb and descend successfully. It was fascinating. In our groups, the challenge varied between different people, for instance some people found the descending most difficult as we had to have a mutual trust within one another whilst we abseiled down the climbing walls. On the other hand, some found the ascending most strenuous due to the change in vertical incline, the distorted shapes and not to mention the altering levels of skill needed. All in all, we needed perseverance, physical endurance and courage to complete the day successfully.
Next, the leadership activity consisted of one of the instructors questioning our knowledge about what leadership involves and the prominent traits of a good leader; we learned about the different types of leaders- extroverts and introverts. Unfortunately, we were unable to escape the constraints of testing even outside of the classroom. This is due to the fact that we were given a survival scenario, which NASA uses in their selection process for astronauts, this required us to arrange a list of items in order of importance for survival in a given scenario. This meant that we had to use logical thinking, which the instructor then observed to see whether we portrayed any leadership traits subconsciously.
All things considered, our confidence emanated, an example of this is during the last hour when we carried out bouldering, which involved rock climbing without a harness; at the start of the day this would have been an unquestionable thought. Mr Blandford on the other hand, excelled. We thoroughly enjoyed our day and are grateful for this opportunity to be a part of the Ajvir Singh Sandhu Leadership Foundation.
